Introduction

My name is Idil Abdinur. I am a 19 year old photography student at the University of Lincoln. I was born and raised in North West London. Photography has always been a passion of mine, since a young age I can truly say I found comfort in the Art. Living in such an exciting city, I carried my camera with me everywhere as I found the urban scene as aesthetically pleasing as a pastoral setting. I chose to study photography because it challenged me to find beauty in places people wouldn’t dare to look. I studied photography as an AS in my first year of sixth form and decided to do a level 3 BTEC at the City of Westminster College. Here I was able to develop my skills in the darkroom, from processing my own film to developing. I’d also worked with shooting with 35mm, medium format and large format. Outside of the darkroom I gained skills in photographic studio practices, working with digital photography such as DSLR’s and tethered shooting using capture one and lightroom. Aside from technical skills, I was also allowed to obtain work experience. I worked with two photographers named Tim & Barry, from Tim&BarryTV working on a street photography project for Paddington Arts. I really enjoyed this project as it had opened my eyes and gave me a deeper understanding into a different world of photography, it had allowed me to see beauty in rough settings and showed me how composition plays a great part in taking a good photograph. In addition to this, I decided to take summer school classes at the London College of Communication. It was a course in documentary photography and photojournalism. I decided to approach this because I was incredibly inspired and influenced by other documentary photographers such as Alec Soth, Eugene Richards, Bruce Gilden and Cristina De Middel. This course took me out of my comfort zone, being the shy and introverted individual that I am, I had to go out into the streets of Elephant Castle and photograph strangers. This played a big part into making me the photographer that I am today as it had boosted my confidence and allowed me to speak to strangers. Outside of the academic side of photography, I use social media such as Tumblr and instagram to display and exhibit my work.
