Genres

For this blog post I will be discussing the diverse types of genres you find in photography. I will be exploring this in my own practice as well as considering the work of other photographers. Photography has a wide spectrum of genres and themes. Its what makes this course so exciting, as you can range from editorial photography to street or documentary style work. The photography industry itself is so diverse which means photographers working in different genres would need different equipment, different training and different working parameters. For example, the modes of operation Edward Weston used would be completely different to someone like Bruce Gilden.

Documentary photography
Documentary photography includes photographers such as Bruce Gilden, Cristina De Middel and Alec Soth. Documentary photography is a style of photography that gives a straightforward and accurate representation of people, places, objects and events, and is often used in reportage (Tate, 2017) Documentary style photography is taken outside of the studio, it could be either environmental or indoors. It must be truthful, honest and objective. A good example of documentary photography is Alec Soth’s book “sleeping by the Mississippi “this documents the people and landscape around the river of Mississippi. He creates stories around his subjects.

Fashion Photography
Fashion photography is sub genre of photography; however, it is completely an adverse to documentary. The purpose of fashion photography is to display clothing and is usually for advertisement purposes or fashion magazines such as Vogue. There’s various categories of fashion photography, for example catalog which is usually informational images where the poses and makeup are subdued. It is straight to the point. Catolog photographs are usually sophisticated and simplistic. There is also editorial photography, which is more extreme. The model is normally placed in an environment which links to living the lifestyle they are trying to portray. An example of editorial photography is Bruce Weber, who is a well-known American fashion photographer and filmmaker.

desketFor this project I decided to experiment with shooting documentary style photography. I worked with one of my friends who lives in my accommodation. I wanted to portray her lifestyle, and photograph her in her environment. So, I decided to shoot her in her home, her room and kitchen. We were mid conversation when I took this picture, whilst she was leaning on her ironing board on her phone. She did not notice me take this shot. I wanted to capture her in her most truthful element.

In this next shot I took Naomi outside, I directed her on how to pose for the shot. I would say this is a fashion shot because it was focused on the colourful dashiki she was wearing. The way I used the lighting as well and placed her in front. I took this shot during the day using a small aperture. I like this shot because it’s something I could see in front of a magazine, I.e I.D
